Unveiling the Horrors of Child Abuse: Justice Served, but Wounds Remain
A Survivor's Reflection on the Ruby Franke Case
On August 30, 2023, the arrest of Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt sent shockwaves through Ivins, Utah, and beyond. Charged with six counts of aggravated child abuse, the details that emerged were nothing short of harrowing. Franke's twelve-year-old son, emaciated and bound with duct tape, sought help from a neighbor, revealing a house of horrors where he and his sister endured malnourishment and severe physical abuse. The arrest shed light on a dark reality hidden behind closed doors.
As an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse myself, the news of the Franke case struck a chord deep within me. The pain and suffering endured by Ruby's children are unfathomable, leaving scars that may never fully heal. My own journey of healing has been fraught with challenges, and I empathize deeply with those who have endured similar trauma.
The Bible speaks extensively about the importance of protecting and caring for children. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus warns, "But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." The gravity of harming a child is unmistakably clear in these words.
Matthew 18:6 (NIV)
Causing to Stumble
โถโIf anyone causes one of these little onesโthose who believe in meโto stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Cases like Ruby Franke's serve as a sobering reminder of the prevalence of child abuse in our communities. It is incumbent upon us as neighbors and members of society to be vigilant and proactive in protecting the most vulnerable among us. The bystander effect, where individuals refrain from intervening in situations of harm, must be overcome through a collective commitment to speaking up and taking action.
While the sentencing of Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt may bring a sense of closure to some, the road to healing for their children is long and arduous. Justice has been served, but the scars of psychological, emotional, and physical abuse run deep. Sleep deprivation, malnourishment, and trauma have left lasting imprints that cannot be erased with a court ruling.
As we reflect on the Franke case and its implications, let us resolve to be advocates for change in our communities. Let us extend a hand of compassion and support to those who have suffered and work tirelessly to prevent future instances of child abuse. Only through collective action and unwavering dedication can we hope to create a safer and more just world for all children.
In conclusion, while justice has been served in the Ruby Franke case, the wounds inflicted on her children serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for vigilance and advocacy in combating child abuse. May we stand united in our commitment to protecting the innocent and ensuring that every child grows up in an environment of love, safety, and dignity.

Thanks for sharing this, Ray. I imagine there are few among us who haven't been touched in some way by child abuse. The wounds last a lifetime.
