The Struggles I Encountered at St. Mary's Cathedral: A Personal Account
Reflecting on the Challenges I Faced in a Place of Worship
In the solemn halls of St. Mary's Cathedral, I once sought spiritual refuge and guidance. Little did I know that this revered place of worship would become the backdrop of a deeply troubling chapter in my life.
Introduction:
It was during my time at St. Mary's Cathedral, an Anglican church under the leadership of Dean Andrew Cheah, that I faced an unsettling event that left a lasting impact on me. St. Mary's Cathedral, the oldest church in Malaysia, seemed like a haven of solace for many. But for me, it became a place where I discovered the darker side of human nature and questioned the leadership's commitment to Christian values.
The Unfortunate Incident:
The incident I speak of revolves around the unaliving of a dear friend named Audrey, a young soul with a promising future. My heart still aches when I recall the unfortunate events that transpired during our time at St. Mary's. Audrey and I attended the church together, and her struggle with life became all too apparent. Her presence and subsequent absence would come to symbolize the difficulties I faced as a member of this congregation.
A Troubling Response:
What disturbed me even more than Audrey's tragedy was the response from the church leadership, particularly Dean Andrew Cheah. Their haste in covering up the incident and the eagerness to deny its occurrence was disheartening. While I witnessed Audrey's suffering and the struggle she faced, the church's leadership seemed more inclined to protect their image than provide genuine support to those in need.
Theological Division:
Underneath the surface, the church had its own theological divisions, notably a fascination with Calvinism and Once Saved Forever Saved theology. Those who, like me, did not subscribe to these beliefs often found themselves marginalized and even demonized by leaders who should have embraced unity and understanding.
A Failed Leader:
Dean Andrew Cheah, to my eyes, presented himself as a failed leader. His leadership style, lack of empathy, and questionable actions during Audrey's ordeal left me disillusioned. The church, I believed, had lost its way under his guidance.
A Call for Truth and Transparency:
Audrey's story is just one example of the issues that persisted at St. Mary's Cathedral. While I may no longer be part of that congregation, I feel compelled to speak my truth. The church, like any place of worship, should be a sanctuary of compassion, love, and understanding.
Conclusion:
As I remember Audrey and reflect on the struggles we faced at St. Mary's Cathedral, my hope is that my voice can serve as a reminder that every place of worship should embody the teachings of love and compassion that Jesus Christ imparted. It is a reminder that no one should be judged for their spiritual beliefs or questioned for seeking answers.
My faith has not wavered despite the adversity I faced. Instead, I draw my strength from the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. It is a love that transcends the shortcomings of any institution and fills me with hope for a future where empathy and understanding prevail.

Call to Action:
Let us remember that we are all God's children, deserving of love and understanding. It is essential to create an environment in our places of worship where compassion, unity, and truth can flourish. We should be there for one another, just as Jesus is there for all of us.
