Songs of Struggle: A Journey Through Mental Health Awareness Month
Exploring Personal Reflections on Addiction, Faith, and Bipolar Disorder Through Music
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the challenges and triumphs of those navigating the complexities of mental health. In this article, I want to share my own mental health journey through the lens of music, as each song has played a significant role in reflecting my struggles and victories.
1. "Rehab" by Rihanna featuring Justin Timberlake:
The lyrics of Rehab resonate deeply with me as a former addict. From a young age, I battled with addiction to substances, and it nearly destroyed me. Rihanna's portrayal in the music video mirrors the pain and damage addiction inflicts, and serves as a poignant reminder of the havoc it wreaked on my life.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." - Psalm 147:3 (NIV)
2. "Russian Roulette" by Rihanna:
"Russian Roulette" feels like a personal anthem, capturing the constant struggle of avoiding relapse. Every day feels like a gamble, as I navigate the temptations and triggers that threaten to pull me back into destructive habits. The music video powerfully portrays the internal turmoil of living on the edge of uncertainty.
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." - Psalm 18:2 (NIV)
3. "Unfaithful" by Rihanna:
This song strikes a chord as I reflect on my own unfaithfulness, not to a romantic partner, but to my faith in Jesus Christ. Despite knowing His unwavering love and grace, I sought solace and fulfillment in fleeting pleasures. Yet, even in my darkest moments of unfaithfulness, Jesus remained faithful and forgave me.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 (NIV)
4. "Disturbia" by Rihanna:
Living with Bipolar 2 Disorder often feels like navigating through a constant state of "Disturbia." The mood swings and challenges are palpable, and maintaining stability can be a daunting task. However, with the support of medication, loved ones, and most importantly, the sustaining love of Jesus Christ, I am able to persevere through the darkest of days.
"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:17-18 (NIV)
In conclusion, May serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and self-care. Through the power of music and the timeless truths found in Scripture, we can find solace, understanding, and even inspiration to continue our journey towards healing and wholeness.
May we all find strength in vulnerability, courage in adversity, and faith in the journey towards mental health and well-being.
