Resilience Amidst Turmoil: Finding Sanctuary in Unlikely Places
A Journey of Faith, Resilience, and God's Unwavering Provision
In 2019, emerging from a medical facility, I found myself adrift, grappling with severe depression and financial instability. With no means of income and a past marred by childhood sexual trauma, I had no choice but to seek refuge with my birth parents, despite the distressing memories they held. It was a temporary respite, but it swiftly spiraled into an environment of toxicity and pain.
Living under the same roof as my alcoholic biological father became unbearable. An altercation became the final straw, leading to a distressing encounter that involved the police. I had to break away for my own well-being.
Leaving wasn't an easy choice. Financial turmoil, exacerbated by Bipolar II challenges and lingering debts, defined my past. Yet, hard work and high qualifications from years of demanding jobs had built a reserve of savings. It was these savings that afforded me an unexpected opportunity—a sanctuary in the unlikeliest of places—a hotel.
The transition felt surreal, almost like a dream I never dared to entertain. Securing a room, thanks to a personal connection, was a turning point. For nearly two years, that hotel room became more than just a temporary dwelling. It was a sanctuary—a place of solace and stability amidst life's chaos.
Living there wasn't without its challenges. The financial burden was relentless, demanding an unwavering commitment to hard work. The cost was high, but the semblance of normalcy was priceless.
During this time, I leaned heavily on my faith, clinging to God's promises. Scriptures like Philippians 4:13 became my lifeline: "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." This verse echoed through the darkest moments, a beacon of hope in the midst of uncertainty.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."- Proverbs 3:5-6
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."- Isaiah 43:2
Reflecting on this period, I've discovered that strength doesn't always come from moments of triumph but from enduring the storms life throws your way. The hotel room became a metaphor—a symbol of resilience in adversity, a reminder that even in the unlikeliest places, hope can reside.
Now, as I look ahead, I carry the lessons learned—a testament to the unwavering resilience that resides within.
I'm now in a better place, a decent home with all the basic amenities. While it's not as luxurious as the hotel, it's a safe haven that I call my own. Affording the rent brings a sense of security—a roof over my head, a foundation for stability that I've yearned for.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."- Jeremiah 29:11
This chapter of my life, though marked by challenges, brought growth and newfound stability. It taught me that resilience isn't just bouncing back; it's about finding strength in vulnerability, hope in chaos, and serenity in the midst of turmoil.
Throughout this journey, I've experienced God's presence and provision firsthand. Despite the odds, I never missed rent during my stay at the hotel. God's faithfulness and provision were evident every single time, reinforcing my unwavering belief that He is real and has been profoundly real in my life.
Now, as I continue forward, I carry the resilience forged through adversity—a testament to the unwavering strength within.
