Peacemaking in the Face of Profit: Navigating Defense Investments
Exploring Moral Dilemmas and Spiritual Reflections in the Military Industrial Complex
Last week, Friedberg, Sacks, and Chamath delved into the complexities of investing in defense startups on The All In Pod. Both Sacks and Chamath expressed reservations about investing in startups that manufacture weapons. However, they have invested in defense companies developing defensive technologies, intelligence gathering systems, and life-saving innovations like Saildrone and Allen Control Systems.
Sacks stated, "I don't have a problem with investing in a company like Anduril. America needs defense companies ... and we need startup disruptors. So I'm not morally opposed to it. And in fact, I think it's probably a good thing."
"I think my concern would be I don't really want to be part of the military industrial complex. I feel like it might corrupt my views on things. I don't want to feel an incentive to be like these generals who go on CNN and Fox News and justify every single war."
Chamath echoed similar sentiments, "That's my biggest fear as well. It's one thing to be investing in a bunch of companies where we're sitting around hoping for cheaper clicks on Facebook and Google. It's an entirely other thing to sit on the board of a company and hope for war. That's a horrible place to be."
"If you believe that America should be the most important country in the world, and you have the ability to help it be that, eventually some of those decisions will come in contact with (the choice to invest in defense startups)."
Friedberg added, "I think the fact that both of you highlighted degree of trepidation and you guys are fairly outside of the middle bounds of how Silicon Valley would think and make decisions indicates why so much of Silicon Valley has deep concerns about investing in defense technology..."
Personal Reflections:
I believe there are many neocons or war hawks in powerful positions in America. Individuals like Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, and Nikki Haley, who champion wars and war efforts, often benefit financially from ongoing conflicts due to their investments in defense companies like Raytheon and others. It's troubling to see these individuals, who publicly tout themselves as Christians and claim to have Christian convictions, support actions that result in bloodshed and war crimes.
Relevant Bible Scriptures:
1. Matthew 5:9 (NIV): "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."
2. Romans 12:18 (NIV): "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."
3. Proverbs 12:20 (NIV): "Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy."
As Christians, it's clear from these scriptures that our faith calls us to be peacemakers and to strive for reconciliation and peace, rather than advocating for war and violence. Instead of offensive attacks, we should prioritize negotiations and peace talks to resolve conflicts.
By reflecting on these principles, we can contribute to a world where peace prevails over conflict and where all individuals can live without fear of war.

This is eye opening and insightful. Pretty sure a lot knows about this but are silenced. Hopefully this will break through the silencers.
