From Despair to Celebration: A Decade of Transformation
How Finding Love and Purpose Saved Miguel from the Depths of Despair
In 2009, Miguel Olave found himself at the brink of despair, contemplating ending his life. Yet, a chance encounter at a church would change the course of his life forever. As he recounts in a heartfelt LinkedIn post, Miguel shares his journey from the depths of hopelessness to celebrating a decade of marriage to his beloved wife, Alexis.
"At that moment, I was certain I didn't believe in a higher power," Miguel recalls. "But as soon as I walked into the church, the pastor approached me and uttered words that pierced through my soul: 'God wanted me to tell you that you’re supposed to be here right now.'"
Those words ignited a spark within Miguel, propelling him on a quest to discover his purpose. However, the journey was fraught with challenges, and in 2012, he found himself once again on the precipice of despair.
"God, if you really want me here, give me a reason to stay," he prayed.
And that reason manifested in the form of Alexis and her son.
"Just as I was ready to leave this world again, this gorgeous woman and her 5-year-old son came in & saved me," Miguel shares.
Despite his initial doubts about marriage and parenthood, he knew from the moment he met them that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Alexis.
"The journey wasn't the easiest," Miguel admits. "Being so young, figuring ourselves out, while figuring each other out and being parents to 4 boys."
Yet, through it all, Alexis stood by his side, offering unwavering support and love.
"Today I love myself more and respect myself more," Miguel reflects. "She's helped me become the man I am today by being patient and giving me space when I needed it."
As Miguel and Alexis embark on a celebratory trip to Mexico, he acknowledges the importance of support systems in navigating mental health struggles.
"Shoutout to the partners, family & friends who have been a saving grace for so many of us learning to navigate our mental health," he acknowledges.
Miguel's story is a testament to the transformative power of love, resilience, and faith. His journey serves as a beacon of hope for those grappling with their own battles, reminding them that even in their darkest moments, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
As we celebrate Miguel's triumphs and the love that has guided him through the toughest of times, let us remember the importance of having faith. Matthew 9:29 reminds us, "According to your faith let it be done to you." We have the power to speak life into our situations, as Proverbs 18:21 states, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Matthew 9:29 (NIV)
²⁹Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;
Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)
²¹The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Trusting God and walking by faith, as exhorted in 2 Corinthians 5:7, is key to overcoming life's challenges. Just as Miguel trusted in God's plan for his life and found purpose and love, may we too have the courage to trust in His faithfulness.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
⁷For we live by faith, not by sight.
Miguel's journey also echoes the story of Abraham in the Bible, who remained faithful and obedient to God's promises despite facing seemingly impossible circumstances. In Genesis 28:15, God assures Jacob, "I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Like Jacob, Miguel experienced God's unwavering presence and provision throughout his journey.
Genesis 28:15 (NIV)
¹⁵I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV)
²⁷“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
Mark 9:23 (NIV)
²³“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Paul's words in Philippians 1:6 resonate deeply with Miguel's story: "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Miguel's transformation is a testament to God's faithfulness to fulfill His promises in the lives of those who trust in Him.
Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
⁶being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
