Finding Gratitude in Christian Upbringing: A former Hindu's Reflection
Reflecting on the Value of Christian Foundation and Embracing Faith in Jesus Christ
Growing up in a Southern Baptist household, conservative values and strict rules shaped Allie Beth Stuckey's upbringing. From church attendance to Christian education, she cherishes the foundation laid by her parents, despite not agreeing with every aspect of her upbringing. Stuckey's gratitude for her Christian childhood resonates with many who share similar experiences.
Stuckey shared, "I grew up in a Southern Baptist, conservative home with parents who had strict rules about what TV shows I could watch and what music I could listen to. I was 8 during the 2000 election, and my parents had to lie to me that night, assuring me the election was over and Bush had won so I would go to bed without worrying. We went to church every Wednesday and Sunday (and sometimes Sunday nights). I went to Christian camps and youth group events where (the goods and the bads of) 'purity culture' was taught."
As a Hindu for 23 years, I initially felt a sense of longing upon hearing Stuckey's story. Raised without a relationship with God and unfamiliar with Christian values, I couldn't help but ponder the potential richness of a Christian upbringing. However, upon encountering the love of Jesus Christ and embracing His teachings, my perspective shifted.
While I may not have experienced the same Christian upbringing as Stuckey, I now recognize the inherent value in a foundation rooted in faith and biblical principles. The journey from staunch Hinduism to finding solace and purpose in Christ has been transformative, leading me to appreciate the Christian foundation that many are blessed with from childhood.
Stuckey continued, "And guess what? Iโm thankful for all of it! I donโt agree with every theological or political position of my upbringing, but Iโm still a Christian, still a Baptist, and I still have a great relationship with my parents. Iโm not only not traumatized by this ~scary~ evangelical childhood, Iโm immensely grateful for it. I canโt thank my parents enough for the foundation of church-going and Christian education they gave me. Wouldnโt trade it for the world."
In reflecting on the significance of faith, I find comfort in the timeless wisdom of Scripture:
1. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV): "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
2. Psalm 127:3 (NIV): "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him."
3. Ephesians 6:4 (NIV): "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
4. 2 Timothy 3:15 (NIV): "and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
Embracing faith in Jesus Christ has brought newfound joy and fulfillment to my life. While my journey may differ from those raised in Christian households, I am grateful for the opportunity to anchor my life in Christ and His teachings.
Stuckey concluded, "My husband has the same exact story. We are all surrounded by family members we love who are in healthy marriages and are raising their kids in the Lord. The Christian foundation is a good one."
As I continue to grow in faith, I pray for God's guidance and blessings in my journey ahead. May we all find solace and strength in our respective faith journeys, embracing the love and grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
