Encounters of Faith: An Inspiring Day with Sister Maria
In the Company of a Roman Catholic Nun — Exploring Devotion, Humility, and Faith
As I walked through the peaceful halls of an old folks home run by a Roman Catholic church, little did I know that I was about to embark on a journey of inspiration and faith. My encounter with Sister Maria, a Roman Catholic nun, was a testament to the profound impact of unwavering devotion, humility, and the power of living selflessly for the Lord.
Sister Maria welcomed me with a warm and gentle smile, her eyes reflecting a deep, abiding faith that seemed to radiate from her very being. It was clear that her love for Jesus was unwavering, and her life's purpose was devoted entirely to Him.
1 Corinthians 7:8 (NIV) ⁸Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.
Ephesians 6:7-8 (NIV) ⁷Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, ⁸because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
She graciously shared her journey as a nun, the sacred vows she had taken, and the simplicity of her life. Sister Maria's modesty and humility were striking, a living embodiment of the vow of poverty that Roman Catholic nuns commit to. She had forsaken everything to serve the Lord, and her dedication was both inspiring and humbling.
Matthew 16:24-25 (NIV) ²⁴Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. ²⁵For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
Romans 12:1-2 had always been close to my heart, a powerful reminder of the kind of devotion and transformation I aspired to experience. It was a path I longed to walk, to offer my life as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to the Lord. My heart resonated with the idea of being transformed by the renewing of my mind to discern God's will. As a constant reminder of this journey, I've made the decision to get Romans 12:1 inked on my right arm soon, a tangible symbol of my commitment.
Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) A Living Sacrifice 12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. ²Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Sister Maria's life mirrored the essence of Romans 12:1-2. Her unwavering faith and dedication to the Lord were a living testament to these verses. She embodied the idea of presenting one's body as a living sacrifice, wholly and pleasing to God. Her life was a continuous renewal, a transformation of unwavering devotion.
But the blessings of the day didn't end with inspiration alone. As a beautiful gesture of kindness, Sister Maria gifted me a Holy Rosary and a Roman Catholic Bible. These gifts serve as precious reminders of the enduring power of faith, the unbreakable connection to the divine, and the importance of carrying the teachings of Jesus in our hearts.
Her willingness to give, even from a place of poverty, reminded me of the Biblical story of the Widow's Offering in Luke 21:1-4. In this story, Jesus observed the rich contributing to the temple treasury, but it was the poor widow who gave two small copper coins, which He proclaimed to be a greater offering than all the rest. She had given from her poverty, putting in all she had to live on.
Luke 21:1-4 (NIV) The Widow’s Offering 21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. ²He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. ³“Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. ⁴All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Sister Maria, like the widow, exemplified the idea that the value of a gift is not measured by its monetary worth but by the love, intention, and sacrifice behind it. Her generosity, despite her modest lifestyle, serves as a powerful reminder of the abundance of faith and the richness of the heart.
Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) ²⁵A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
In the company of Sister Maria, I learned that true wealth isn't measured in material possessions but in the richness of one's faith and the depth of one's love for the Lord. The encounter with this remarkable soul left me profoundly blessed, and I carry with me the lessons of that day as I continue on my own faith journey.
May we all find inspiration in the unwavering devotion and humility of individuals like Sister Maria and be reminded of the transformative power of faith and selflessness in our own lives.
