Embracing Faith After a Beautiful Mistake: My Journey Beyond PwC Malaysia
Discovering Faith and Advocating Change: A Journey Beyond Corporate Expectations
In 2015, fresh out of college and armed with professional qualifications, I stepped into a job at PwC Malaysia through their Industry Xplorer programme—a dream opportunity for many. Yet, what seemed like a significant milestone quickly unfolded into an emotionally turbulent experience.
At 22, I found myself amidst a batch of brilliant minds from top universities like University of Warwick, Imperial College London, The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UNSW, Murdoch University and others. However, I felt like an outsider—an awkward young man thrust into an environment that felt incompatible with my life's challenges. I wasn't prepared for the demands of the workforce, battling episodes of depression and coping with mood irregularities. My independence clashed with the rigid demands of the corporate world.
Joining PwC Malaysia was meant to be an achievement, but it became a beautiful mistake. A month into the job, I made the tough decision to resign, facing swift backlash from family, particularly my father, who valued the façade of prestige more than my well-being.
The environment didn't accommodate my struggles. I wasn't heard or understood when I sought support. Instead, I was advised to leave. And leaving became the turning point—a beautiful mistake that led me to a profound encounter.
Amidst the darkness, I found solace and faith. It was after leaving PwC Malaysia when I was about to be sent to PwC India for an audit engagement that I encountered Jesus Christ. It was then that my life took an unexpected turn for the better. I discovered resilience, strength, and a newfound purpose beyond the corporate confines.
This journey wasn't without its challenges. I faced regrets, but I also found gratitude in the lessons learned. It wasn't the end; it was a beginning. Despite what I was told, my life didn't crumble after leaving abruptly. I found opportunities elsewhere, leveraging my qualifications and skills in environments that aligned better with who I am.
Reflecting on my first work experience, I recognize the need for change in the Malaysian workforce. Here are a few ideas for workplaces to accommodate individuals facing mental health challenges:
1. Flexible Work Arrangements: Allow flexible working hours or remote work options to help individuals manage their mental health without compromising productivity.
2. Mental Health Support Programs: Implement employee assistance programs that provide access to counseling services, mental health resources, and support groups.
3. Training and Awareness: Conduct workshops and training sessions to educate employees and managers about mental health issues, fostering a more understanding and empathetic workplace culture.
4. Personalized Support Plans: Offer personalized accommodations tailored to individual needs, such as adjusted workloads or schedules during challenging periods.
My hope for the future is that employers foster a culture of empathy and understanding. I yearn for workplaces that prioritize mental health, making necessary accommodations for individuals like me to thrive. I envision a future where every person, irrespective of their struggles, finds a supportive and accommodating environment to grow and contribute.
This article was inspired by Amalina Davis, a true source of encouragement. She has made it possible for someone like me to openly share struggles as someone with Bipolar 2. I recommend checking out her and her organization Thrive Well , managed by Ellisha Othman, for insights on establishing better mental health support in the workplace.
My journey from PwC Malaysia was a beautiful mistake—a pivotal moment that led me to discover faith, resilience, and the realization that life's unexpected turns can lead to remarkable new beginnings.
