Breaking Stereotypes, Building Success: A Journey of Authenticity
Discovering My Own Path, Defying Society's Expectations, and Nurturing Mental Well-being in the Process
“As a female of Indian ethnicity, I grew up as a minority, a fact that resonated through every aspect of my life – at home, at school, and even on TV. Society had already scripted the narrative of my life: excel at school (check), get into university (check), become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer (not quite), get married post-university (didn't happen), have a child by 30 (missed the mark). The story had a predetermined arc, with an ending where I wouldn't need to work as my husband would take care of me. However, life had a different plan for me.
In my academic and professional journey, I discovered the value of authenticity and the importance of defining my version of success. I chose to challenge stereotypes, break stigmas, and chart a path that was fulfilling to me, not one dictated by societal norms. Independence, growth, authenticity, and being the driver of my life became my guiding principles, even if it meant defying society's notion of happiness or success. A valuable addition to this journey was understanding the importance of meaningful connections.
In 2014, I embarked on a nerve-wracking transition, founding Eudaimonia, my organizational psychology consulting firm. Leaving a secure, exciting job for the unknown was daunting. Tears of relief and terror accompanied my resignation acceptance in an Italian hotel room. The fear of not getting clients and negative self-talk haunted me. However, with a supportive partner and a reframed inner narrative, I took the leap. Today, Eudaimonia serves clients in Europe and locally, a reality I never envisioned from Malaysia.
Surviving through Covid, Eudaimonia not only weathered the storm but also saw me venture into a gluten-free baking business amid the chaos. Built on the core belief of "Human Flourishing," Eudaimonia signifies flourishing through hardship, celebrations, change, and the phases of life. In 2021, recruiting a talented millennial, Mae, marked a new chapter, amplifying our marketing strategy in the ASEAN region.
Throughout my life, I've faced unwarranted comments and presumptions – from the color of my skin to the size of my nose. Each decade brought new statements or assumptions. However, the impact diminished as I delved into the captivating realm of human behavior, a fascination sparked by childhood curiosity.
Life's challenges, from childhood comments to societal expectations, shaped my resilience. Meaningful connections, especially with family and close friends, grounded me and offered positivity. In a society applauding achievements and social comparisons, we overlook the toll on mental and emotional well-being. Normalizing conversations about emotions, vulnerabilities, and internal battles is crucial.
Addressing mental health should be viewed as an act of courage and bravery, not weakness. My journey as a minority woman defying stereotypes and achieving recognition aims to inspire others in similar shoes. Breaking barriers and creating a fulfilling path on my terms, I've left an indelible mark in the world and enriched clients' mental and emotional well-being. My story challenges societal and cultural expectations, proving that success is defined individually. Remarkable for not letting expectations hinder success, I continue to make waves in redefining 'success,' all while donning my huge red Ariel hoodie!”
